The best day to buy a house in the entire year is Christmas Day – you’re more likely to get a better deal as there isn’t much competition. But, of course, there’s a reason why people just aren’t buying on Christmas Day, and that’s because who wants to spend the big day thinking about property?
But there are much lower numbers of home buyers throughout December, so you don’t need to be buying a house on Christmas Day to get a good price. If you make an offer on a house in the days leading up to the 25th, you’ll be in a great position to get your dream home at a lower price than you would usually, and the process may even be a little smoother.
Everyone loves Christmas
People will generally be in a good mood in December, as they celebrate with family and friends, open presents, and just have a good time.
Because of this, sellers are much more likely to be generous, even if that means selling you their house at a lower price. Ever heard the saying “oh well, it’s Christmas!” being used when people are allowing things to slide that they wouldn’t usually…?
There aren’t many home buyers viewing houses and looking to move over the Christmas period – many people will let it wait until the new year, and are spending more money than usual so the thought of more expenses may not be a pleasant one.
This means that there probably won’t be much competition if you decide to put in an offer, and sellers may sell you the property at a cheaper price.
Lower house prices
The prices of homes in the UK does tend to drop to a 12-month low during December, probably due to the fact that home buyers aren’t looking around this time. Make the most of the opportunity and at least start looking!
Smoother home buying process
The process of buying your new house may be a little smoother if you choose to buy in December. If someone has put their house on the market over this quiet period, you can almost completely trust that they seriously want to sell their home, will be happy to negotiate on the price, and will push the process along at a quicker pace.
Just make sure that you find an estate agent that is willing to work over the Christmas period!
