What is Council Tax?

Council Tax refers to a yearly charge taken by your local authority. This money is then redistributed into the community for the benefit of regional services such as leisure facilities, libraries, schools, transport systems, the police and much more. Typically, you pay this tax in regular installments over the course of a 10-month period, with a 2-month interval. However, as this can make budgeting difficult, many regional authorities will have the option of spreading the same costs over 12-months. The specific amount you will be required to pay will be dependent upon a wide variety of different factors. For instance, your local authority will consider the age, size and location of your property, as well as its present market value. Following this, any home situated within England and Scotland will be placed into one of eight distinct tax bands ranging from A to H.

Cancelling your council tax at an old address

The process of cancelling your council tax will vary slightly depending on whether you are moving into a completely new constituency or remaining in the same administrative division. Either way, it’s a good idea to make the relevant local authority aware of your move well in advance. This will help you to avoid a myriad of complicated and stressful tasks later down the line.

It’s typically recommended that you inform the council of your move at least one month ahead of time, in order to effectively account for the possibility of a lengthy waiting list. However, if you are moving to a new neighbourhood, this is of the upmost importance as your old council will have to close your current account and open another one in the new region. If you fail to initiate this process beforehand you may end paying council tax on the property you’ve just moved out of!

Registering for council tax in your new address

When you are registering for council tax at your new address, you will need to provide a few essential pieces of personal information. These include, details regarding your ownership of the property, any one you will be sharing the house with and the date that you plan to occupy the home. Once this information has been obtained, the council will contact you to outline roughly how much tax you can expect to be paying.

In the circumstance that you do not agree with the proposed charge, there is a formal appeal process in place. However, you will still be obligated to make the suggested payments whilst they are processing your request. This procedure specifically involves the applicant penning a letter to the local council, explaining the reasons for which they are disputing the initial projection.

Applying for a reduction in council tax

In addition to the appeal process, there are also several factors to consider that may make you eligible for a reduction in your council tax. These include:

• Individuals with low incomes
• Individuals living alone
• Individuals with serious mental impairments
• Members of the armed forces (dependent on the type of accommodation)
• Full-time students
• Individuals under the age of 18
• Individuals who have moved into a care home/hospital
• Individuals who are detained in prison
