There is no denying that the process of buying a new home can be one of the most complicated, demanding and stressful tasks that you will ever experience. There are countless hours of administrative and financial work that needs to be considered, before you can even think about the daunting process of transferring all your belongings from one location to another. With so much build-up and anticipation to your eventual move-day, it can be easy to forget some of the essential items that you will need when you are faced with settling into your new home.
That’s why we’ve put together the following list of five essentials item categories for any prospective homeowner to be fully prepared…
This first section also happens to be one of the most important. You should always take some time to identify the items that you use on a day-to-day basis. These tools typically comprise of basic items such as:
- Easy meals and snacks
- Cooking utensils
- Kettle and Coffee/Tea/Hot Chocolate
- Toilet roll
- Bin bags
- Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shower gel)
- Towels and handcloths
- Charging equipment (Phone, tablet, laptop)
- Duvet and pillows
It’s important that you don’t send these items off with the rest of your belongings and instead keep them with you during the day. This way you won’t waste time rummaging through every single box, just to find that one item you need.
As we mentioned in the previous section, its always a good idea to prepare some quick meals or snacks for that first night before you get the chance to do a full shop. More specifically, depending on your preferences, something like pasta, soup or any tinned meal is a potential option. In these circumstances, you’ll also want to make sure you pack some pans, a bowl and basic cutlery (i.e. knives, forks, spoons).
However, like many of us, you may not be in the mood to cook a full meal after a long and exhausting moving day. That’s why it’s a good idea to order a takeaway in advance to make sure that you are covered. If you are looking for something a bit healthier, then there are plenty of fresh food boxes or meal prep companies that you can use instead.
Regardless of whether you are planning on washing that night or first thing the next morning, you should always make sure that you have the basic items to hand with the rest of your essentials. Just to recap, this includes a towel, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. Depending on if your home is furnished or not, you may also want to consider packing a shower curtain.
This is also a good opportunity to mention cleaning supplies and equipment. If you think you may need to give the house a quick tidy, make sure you pack some surface cleaner and cleaning cloths, as well as a dustpan and brush.
We all know that one of the scariest prospects about moving into your new home, can be the idea of surviving without wi-fi or television for a few days! To avoid hours of potential boredom, always prepare some entertainment options such as an iPad, portable games console, books or board game to keep yourself occupied.
If you have any young children, you will also want to make sure that they are occupied whilst you get settled in and deal with any last-minute tasks. Consider taking a toy box or downloading some film or television programmes in advance so that they are not too bored or overwhelmed by their new environment.
